Reddit Seeks to Simplify Search Interface in Effort to Transform into a Search Engine

In today’s world, saturated with AI-generated material and SEO tactics, many users turn to adding “reddit” to their queries in search of authentic perspectives. Google has tried to integrate Reddit’s results into its search features, and in response to this growing trend, Reddit is investigating its own AI search functionalities. However, the company’s ambitions go beyond that: it seeks to establish itself as the go-to search engine for users.

Steve Huffman, the CEO of Reddit, articulated this vision during the recent second-quarter earnings call: “Reddit is one of the rare platforms that can evolve into a genuine search destination. We offer a distinctive range of discussions and insights that aren’t available elsewhere.”

Huffman pointed out that Reddit’s search feature attracts more than 70 million users each week, while its AI-powered Q&A tool, Reddit Answers, is used by 6 million people.

Currently active in twelve countries, Reddit Answers plans to expand globally, aiming to boost its visibility on the platform. The company intends to combine the primary search functionality with Reddit Answers, redesigning its app to make the search box more user-friendly.

“We’re integrating Reddit search and Reddit Answers into a seamless experience, and we plan to highlight that in the app. This means that whether you’re a first-time user or a returning one, the search box will be readily available,” Huffman noted during the call.

Amid the rise of chat-centric search platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s new AI mode, Reddit believes that tapping into its vast collection of user-generated posts and comments will significantly enhance its search capabilities.

Reddit reported a robust second quarter, with a revenue increase of 78%, totaling $500 million compared to the same quarter last year. The company also launched two new advertising tools that allow marketers to analyze Reddit data for trend spotting and utilize brand-related comments in their campaigns.
