Lionesses to Be Celebrated Following Euros Triumph, PM Calls Them ‘True History-Makers’

This summer, the Lionesses came together once again, igniting passion throughout our nation and creating unforgettable moments.

In pubs and living rooms across the country, we gathered around our screens, filled with anticipation. We anticipated excitement from this team — and they certainly delivered.

Thanks to their remarkable achievements, young girls, including my daughter, are now aspiring to greater heights than ever before.

In playgrounds, parks, and community clubs, it’s not just women and girls who are emulating their heroes — this team has motivated us all.

The numbers show that the Lionesses are indeed pioneers — they are the first senior England team to win a major trophy on foreign soil; back-to-back European champions; and have accomplished an impressive trio of trophies under Sarina.

But they are doing more than writing history; they are also shaping the future. This story transcends football.

It embodies the fundamental right to play. It represents what the Lionesses symbolize when they don the national colors. It encapsulates our identity and the extraordinary heights we can achieve together.

Some might have counted England out when we faced a 2-0 setback against Sweden or found ourselves trailing against Italy and Spain. Yet, those who did clearly misunderstood the essence of this team — and the spirit of this nation.

I had the honor of attending the final, and I can assure you that the English spirit never wavered.

The resilience that propelled us to comeback victories in those vital knockout matches reflects the same determination with which this team confronted outdated attitudes that kept earlier generations on the sidelines.

It’s the same bravery and dedication they displayed while speaking out against the appalling and racist online abuse during the tournament.

When the Lionesses don the England jersey, they embody what we collectively stand for: England, in all its splendor, along with our shared history and values — decency, fairness, and respect.

I have engaged with these players and felt their passion — for the game, for their country, and for the next generation they aspire to inspire.

The pride, resilience, and unity that characterize this team exemplify the very best of who we are. They have once again demonstrated what our nation is capable of achieving.

I can think of no better role models for our country.

What Sarina and our Lionesses have accomplished is truly extraordinary. Recognition is on the way — and it will be well-earned for their historic achievements.

However, the most significant tribute will be to harness the inspiration from this summer to build a legacy that the Lionesses have championed: equal access to sports for all girls and boys. This government is ready to take action and make this vision a reality. The Lionesses have made our nation proud.

We are committed to creating a legacy they can take pride in too.
