Anthropic’s Claude AI Model Now Offers Enhanced Prompt Support
Anthropic is expanding the ability for enterprise clients to communicate with Claude in a single prompt, aiming to attract more developers to its renowned AI coding models.
For users of Anthropic’s API, the Claude Sonnet 4 AI model now features a 1 million token context window—capable of handling requests that contain up to 750,000 words, exceeding the entire “Lord of the Rings” trilogy or 75,000 lines of code. This is about five times Claude’s previous limit of 200,000 tokens and over double the 400,000 token context window offered by OpenAI’s GPT-5.
The enhanced context feature will also be available for Claude Sonnet 4 through Anthropic’s cloud partners, including Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud’s Vertex AI.
Anthropic has positioned itself as a top provider among AI model developers by selling Claude to coding platforms such as Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, and Anysphere’s Cursor. While Claude has gained popularity among developers, GPT-5 presents a competitive challenge to Anthropic’s market share, thanks to its appealing pricing and strong coding capabilities. Notably, Anysphere CEO Michael Truell worked with OpenAI to announce GPT-5’s launch, which has now become the default AI model for new Cursor users.
Brad Abrams, Anthropic’s product lead for the Claude platform, told TechCrunch that he expects AI coding platforms to see substantial benefits from this update. When questioned about the impact of GPT-5 on Claude’s API usage, Abrams minimized the concern, expressing satisfaction with the growth of the API sector.
While OpenAI’s primary revenue comes from consumer subscriptions to ChatGPT, Anthropic focuses on selling AI models to enterprises through an API. This emphasis has made AI coding platforms key customers for Anthropic, likely prompting the company to introduce new incentives to attract users in response to GPT-5.
Recently, Anthropic unveiled an upgraded iteration of its flagship AI model, Claude Opus 4.1, which further bolsters the company’s AI coding capabilities.

Generally, AI models perform better across various tasks when given more context, especially in software engineering challenges. For instance, if you ask an AI model to create a new feature for your application, it is likely to perform better if it has access to the entire project rather than just a small section.
Abrams also indicated to TechCrunch that Claude’s large context window enhances its effectiveness on extensive coding tasks, where the AI model independently addresses a problem over long durations. With an extensive context window, Claude is able to remember all previous steps in such prolonged tasks.
However, some companies have taken the concept of large context windows to extremes, asserting that their AI models can handle massive prompts. Google provides a 2 million token context window for Gemini 2.5 Pro, while Meta claims a 10 million token context window for Llama 4 Scout.
Research suggests that there may be limits to the effectiveness of large context windows; AI models often struggle to process these enormous prompts efficiently. Abrams noted that Anthropic’s research team focused not just on increasing Claude’s context window but also on improving the “effective context window,” which means the AI can better understand most of the information presented. However, he did not specify Anthropic’s particular methods.
When prompts to Claude Sonnet 4 exceed 200,000 tokens, Anthropic will impose additional charges for API users, amounting to $6 per million input tokens and $22.50 per million output tokens (up from the former rates of $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens).
