Threads Exceeds 400 Million Monthly Active Users
Just two years after launching as a competitor to Twitter (now X), Meta’s Threads has surpassed 400 million monthly active users (MAUs), as shared by Instagram head Adam Mosseri on Tuesday.
“As of a few weeks ago, we have more than 400 million active users on Threads each month,” stated Mosseri. “It’s been an amazing journey over the last two years. What began as a fun idea to challenge Twitter has evolved into a significant platform that encourages the open exchange of ideas. Thank you all for helping shape this space into what it is today. We have plenty of work ahead, with more updates on the way.”
This milestone indicates that Threads has added 50 million monthly users in the last quarter, following Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement in late April that the platform had surpassed 350 million monthly active users.
In comparison, X reportedly has over 600 million monthly active users, based on previous comments from its former CEO, Linda Yaccarino.
Recent analytics from market intelligence firm Similarweb suggest that Threads is nearing X’s daily mobile app users. In June 2025, Threads’ mobile app for iOS and Android recorded 115.1 million daily active users, reflecting a 127.8% increase from the prior year. Conversely, X reported 132 million daily active users, representing a 15.2% decline year-over-year.
Despite this, Similarweb’s data shows that X’s global daily web visits significantly exceed those of Threads, with the Elon Musk-owned platform achieving 145.8 million average daily web visits worldwide in June, while Threads managed just 6.9 million.
Threads’ growth corresponds with the introduction of several new features over the past year, including direct messaging, fediverse integrations, custom feeds, AI enhancements, and more.
