Airbnb Introduces Option for US Users to Book Stays Without Advance Payment

Airbnb has introduced an innovative feature called “Reserve Now, Pay Later,” which enables U.S. users to book accommodations without any upfront payment. This new enhancement may facilitate easier cancellations if travel conditions change.

This feature is applicable to listings with either a “flexible” or “moderate” cancellation policy. Flexible policies allow users to cancel bookings up to 24 hours before check-in, while moderate policies permit cancellations without a fee until five days prior to check-in.

Guests are required to pay the complete booking amount before the expiration of the listing’s free cancellation window. Airbnb will notify users to complete their payment before this deadline.

Airbnb has prior experience in the buy now, pay later domain. In 2018, it launched a “Pay part now, part later” feature, enabling users to make a partial upfront payment (20% or 50%) and pay the remainder later. In 2023, it collaborated with Klarna, allowing users to split their payments for stays into four installments over a six-week period.

A survey conducted by Focaldata revealed that 55% of respondents favored flexible payment methods when booking accommodations, and 42% admitted to missing out on properties because of payment issues with travel companions.
