ChatGPT Mobile App Generates $2 Billion in Revenue, Averaging $2.91 per Download
The ChatGPT mobile app is achieving remarkable financial success.
Since its launch in May 2023, the ChatGPT app for iOS and Android has amassed $2 billion in global consumer expenditures, according to recent figures from Appfigures, a leading app analytics company. This amount is approximately 30 times the total lifetime earnings of competitors like Claude, Copilot, and Grok, based on their assessments.
In this year alone, the ChatGPT mobile app has brought in $1.35 billion, representing an astonishing 673% increase compared to the $174 million earned from January to July 2024. The app currently generates an average of nearly $193 million each month, a substantial increase from last year’s monthly earnings of $25 million.
This revenue is significantly greater—around 53 times—that of Grok, its closest rival, which reported roughly $25.6 million this year. Grok’s estimated monthly consumer spending is approximately $3.6 million, which accounts for only 1.9% of ChatGPT’s monthly revenue.
The statistics suggest that other consumer chatbots are facing considerable challenges in competing with ChatGPT’s dominance in the mobile sector. However, it’s important to note that these figures do not represent the total revenue generated by these AI companies since various AI services are available to both consumers and businesses, creating multiple revenue channels, including APIs.
Nevertheless, these new insights shed light on user engagement levels, as an increasing number of individuals continue to discover and download these AI assistants from app marketplaces.
It’s interesting to mention that xAI’s Grok, which launched in November 2023 (following ChatGPT), initially did not have dedicated apps for iOS and Android, being accessible only on the X platform. The iOS version of Grok was released in early January 2025, followed by its introduction on Google Play on March 4.

Despite this, ChatGPT’s lifetime global revenue per download stands at $2.91, compared to Claude’s $2.55, Grok’s $0.75, and Copilot’s $0.28, as reported by Appfigures.
In the United States, ChatGPT’s revenue per download is particularly impressive, at $10, which constitutes 38% of the app’s total revenue so far. Germany ranks as the second-largest market, contributing 5.3% to ChatGPT’s overall income.
ChatGPT’s market dominance is further highlighted by its download statistics. The app has reached about 690 million global downloads, significantly surpassing Grok’s 39.5 million downloads. This context provides clarity to Elon Musk’s recent remarks regarding what he perceives as the App Store’s favoritism towards ChatGPT in its Top Charts.
Globally, ChatGPT records approximately 45 million downloads each month, reflecting a 180% increase from roughly 16 million during the January to July period of 2024.
As of 2025, ChatGPT has achieved a cumulative total of 318 million downloads, which is 2.8 times higher than the 113 million downloads reported at the same time the previous year. In terms of download distribution, India leads with 13.7% of total downloads, closely followed by the U.S. at 10.3%.
