ChatGPT Mobile App Hits $2 Billion in Revenue, Averaging $2.91 Per Download
The ChatGPT mobile app has reached remarkable financial achievements.
Since launching in May 2023, the ChatGPT app for iOS and Android has amassed $2 billion in consumer spending globally, as reported by Appfigures, a prominent app analytics company. This amount is approximately 30 times greater than the lifetime earnings of competing apps like Claude, Copilot, and Grok, according to their analyses.
This year alone, the ChatGPT app has generated $1.35 billion, showcasing an astounding 673% increase compared to the $174 million earned between January and July 2024. Currently, the app enjoys an average monthly revenue close to $193 million, a significant rise from last year’s average of $25 million.
This revenue is significantly higher—around 53 times more than Grok, its closest competitor, which reported approximately $25.6 million this year. Grok’s estimated monthly consumer spending stands at about $3.6 million, making up merely 1.9% of ChatGPT’s monthly income.
The data suggests that other consumer chatbots are struggling to compete with ChatGPT’s supremacy in the mobile sector. However, it is crucial to note that these figures do not capture the full revenue of these AI companies, as many AI services available for consumers and businesses offer diverse revenue streams, including APIs.
Nevertheless, these findings highlight user engagement, with more individuals continuing to discover and download these AI assistants from app stores.
Furthermore, it’s notable that xAI’s Grok, which was launched in November 2023 (after ChatGPT), did not initially have dedicated iOS and Android applications and was solely available on the X platform. The iOS app for Grok debuted in early January 2025, with its Google Play release following on March 4.

Additionally, ChatGPT’s global revenue per download stands at $2.91, compared to Claude’s $2.55, Grok’s $0.75, and Copilot’s $0.28, according to Appfigures.
In the United States, ChatGPT’s per-download revenue is particularly noteworthy at $10, accounting for 38% of the app’s total revenue to date. Germany ranks as the second-largest market, contributing 5.3% to ChatGPT’s total earnings.
ChatGPT’s market leadership is further underscored by its download statistics. The app has reached approximately 690 million downloads globally, vastly outpacing Grok’s 39.5 million. This context sheds light on Elon Musk’s recent remarks regarding the perceived bias of the App Store in favor of ChatGPT in its Top Charts.
Worldwide, ChatGPT accumulates roughly 45 million downloads each month, reflecting a 180% increase from around 16 million logged between January and July 2024.
As of 2025, ChatGPT has achieved a total of 318 million downloads, which is 2.8 times more than last year’s 113 million downloads at the same period. In terms of distribution, India leads with 13.7% of total downloads, closely followed by the U.S. at 10.3%.
