ChatGPT Mobile App Hits $2 Billion in Revenue, Earning an Average of $2.91 per Download

The ChatGPT mobile application is experiencing remarkable financial growth.

Since its debut in May 2023, the ChatGPT app for iOS and Android has generated $2 billion in consumer spending worldwide, as per recent findings from Appfigures, a leading app analytics firm. This total is about 30 times more than the cumulative lifetime revenue of rivals such as Claude, Copilot, and Grok, as noted in their analysis.

This year alone, the ChatGPT mobile app has brought in $1.35 billion, reflecting an astounding 673% year-over-year increase compared to the $174 million earned from January to July in 2024. Currently, the app averages nearly $193 million each month, a considerable jump from last year’s monthly earnings of $25 million.

This amount is significantly higher—approximately 53 times—than Grok, its nearest competitor, which reported around $25.6 million this year. Grok’s estimated monthly consumer spending is about $3.6 million, constituting merely 1.9% of ChatGPT’s monthly revenue.

The data suggests that other consumer chatbots face a considerable challenge in rivaling ChatGPT’s leading position in the mobile sector. However, these figures do not include the overall revenue generated by these AI companies, as various AI services are subscribed to by both consumers and businesses, diversifying their income avenues through multiple channels, including APIs.

Nevertheless, this new information sheds light on user engagement levels, as people continue to discover and download these AI assistants from mobile app marketplaces.

It’s also notable that when xAI’s Grok launched in November 2023 (following ChatGPT), it lacked standalone apps for iOS and Android, being accessible only on the X platform. The iOS version for Grok was released in early January 2025, with a Google Play launch on March 4.

Despite this, ChatGPT’s total lifetime global revenue per download stands at $2.91, compared to Claude’s $2.55, Grok’s $0.75, and Copilot’s $0.28, as indicated by Appfigures.

In the U.S., ChatGPT’s revenue per download is particularly noteworthy, at $10, representing 38% of the app’s overall revenue to date. Germany ranks as the second-largest market, contributing 5.3% to ChatGPT’s total earnings.

ChatGPT’s market dominance is further highlighted by its download metrics. The app has seen approximately 690 million global downloads, far surpassing Grok’s 39.5 million downloads. This context helps clarify Elon Musk’s recent comments regarding what he perceives as the App Store’s favor towards ChatGPT in its Top Charts.

Globally, ChatGPT averages about 45 million downloads each month, representing a 180% increase from around 16 million during the January to July period in 2024.

As of 2025, ChatGPT has reached a total of 318 million downloads, which is 2.8 times higher than the 113 million cumulative downloads reported at the same time last year. In terms of download distribution, India leads with 13.7% of the total downloads, closely followed by the U.S. at 10.3%.
