ChatGPT Mobile App Reaches $2 Billion in Revenue, With Average Earnings of $2.91 per Download
The ChatGPT mobile app is generating significant revenue.
Since its debut in May 2023, the ChatGPT app for iOS and Android has generated $2 billion in global consumer investment, according to recent analytics from Appfigures, a leading app intelligence firm. This revenue is approximately 30 times greater than the total lifetime earnings of competitors such as Claude, Copilot, and Grok, as noted in the analysis.
In just this year, ChatGPT’s mobile application has earned $1.35 billion, reflecting an astounding 673% year-on-year growth from $174 million earned during the same period (January-July) of 2024. The app is now averaging nearly $193 million each month, a notable increase from the $25 million reported last year.
This figure is remarkably larger — about 53 times — than Grok, ChatGPT’s nearest competitor, which has recorded approximately $25.6 million this year. Grok’s estimated monthly consumer spending is around $3.6 million, making up only 1.9% of ChatGPT’s monthly revenue.
The data shows that other consumer chatbots have a significant journey ahead to catch up to ChatGPT’s leading status in the mobile sector. However, these numbers do not encompass the total revenue generated by such AI companies, as both consumers and businesses subscribe to AI services online and earn income through diverse channels, including APIs.
Nonetheless, this new data sheds light on user engagement with the application, as users find and acquire these AI assistants via mobile app marketplaces.
It’s also important to note that when xAI’s Grok launched in November 2023 (following ChatGPT), it did not offer standalone iOS and Android versions but was available through the X platform. Grok launched its iOS app in early January 2025 and became accessible on Google Play on March 4.

Despite this, ChatGPT’s total lifetime global revenue per download stands at $2.91, compared to Claude’s $2.55, Grok’s $0.75, and Copilot’s $0.28, as per Appfigures’ findings.
In the U.S., ChatGPT’s revenue per download is particularly impressive at $10, making up 38% of the app’s revenue to date. Germany follows as the second-largest market, contributing 5.3% to ChatGPT’s overall earnings.
ChatGPT’s market leadership is further highlighted by download statistics. The app has been downloaded approximately 690 million times globally, starkly contrasting with Grok’s 39.5 million downloads. This context clarifies Elon Musk’s recent criticisms regarding the App Store’s perceived favoritism toward ChatGPT in its Top Charts.
On a global scale, ChatGPT averages about 45 million downloads each month, representing a 180% increase from around 16 million during the January to July period in 2024.
As of 2025, ChatGPT’s application has seen a total of 318 million downloads to date, which is 2.8 times more than the 113 million cumulative downloads from the same time last year. In terms of download distribution, India leads with 13.7% of total downloads, closely followed by the U.S. at 10.3%.
