ChatGPT’s Mobile App Hits $2 Billion in Revenue, with an Average of $2.91 Per Download
The mobile app for ChatGPT is driving significant revenue.
Since its debut in May 2023, the ChatGPT app for iOS and Android has garnered $2 billion in global consumer investments, based on recent analytics from Appfigures, an app intelligence company. This figure is roughly 30 times greater than the total lifetime revenue of competitors like Claude, Copilot, and Grok, as noted in the analysis.
In just this year, ChatGPT’s mobile app has raked in $1.35 billion, marking a remarkable 673% increase year-over-year from the $174 million earned during the same period (January-July) in 2024. On average, the app now generates close to $193 million monthly, up from $25 million last year.
This amount is notably higher — about 53 times more — than Grok, ChatGPT’s nearest competitor, which has made approximately $25.6 million this year. Grok’s average monthly consumer spending is estimated at $3.6 million, reflecting only 1.9% of ChatGPT’s monthly earnings.
The data suggests that other consumer chatbots still have a considerable way to go in order to catch up to ChatGPT’s dominant position in the mobile market. However, these statistics do not provide a complete picture of the overall revenue generated by these AI firms, as consumers and businesses also subscribe to AI services online and earn revenue through various channels, including APIs.
Nonetheless, this new data sheds light on user engagement with the app, as users find and purchase these AI assistants through mobile app stores.
It is also essential to mention that when xAI’s Grok launched in November 2023 (after ChatGPT), it did not offer standalone iOS and Android apps. Instead, the AI chatbot was accessible through the X platform. Grok introduced its iOS app in early January 2025 and became available on Google Play on March 4.

Despite this, ChatGPT’s lifetime global revenue per download stands at $2.91, compared to Claude’s $2.55, Grok’s $0.75, and Copilot’s $0.28, according to Appfigures’ findings.
In the U.S., ChatGPT’s revenue per download is even more notable at $10, accounting for 38% of the app’s earnings so far. Germany follows as the second-largest market, contributing 5.3% of ChatGPT’s total revenue.
ChatGPT’s dominance is further emphasized by download statistics. The app has been installed around 690 million times globally, in stark contrast to Grok’s 39.5 million installations. This context helps explain Elon Musk’s recent critiques regarding the App Store’s perceived favoritism towards ChatGPT in its Top Charts.
Globally, ChatGPT is now averaging about 45 million downloads each month, marking a 180% increase from approximately 16 million during the January to July period in 2024.
As of 2025, ChatGPT’s app has recorded 318 million downloads so far, which is 2.8 times the 113 million from last year in the same period. However, in terms of installation counts, India leads the market with 13.7% of total downloads, closely followed by the U.S. at 10.3%.
