Discover the Future: AI-Enhanced Stuffed Animals for Your Kids!
Can AI chatbots integrated into charming plush toys truly replace the screen time children engage in?
This strategy is being adopted by companies advocating for these AI-assisted companions for kids. However, Amanda Hess from The New York Times conveys serious concerns. She recounts an experience with Grem, a product from the startup Curio, which also offers a plush toy named Grok, seemingly unrelated to Elon Musk’s chatbot.
Hess ultimately concludes that she “would not consider introducing Grem to my own children.” During her interaction with the chatbot, she felt it was “less an upgrade from the lifeless teddy bear” and more “a replacement for me.”
She argues that while these engaging toys may occupy children away from screens, they suggest that “the ultimate destination of [children’s] curiosity resides within their devices.”
In the end, Hess permitted her children to interact with Grem — but only after she removed and hid the voice box. They played games and engaged with it, afterward expressing a desire to watch television.
