Unleash Tomorrow’s Playtime: Introducing AI-Enhanced Plush Toys for Kids!

Can AI chatbots embedded in interactive plush toys genuinely replace the screen time that children typically choose?

This idea is gaining momentum among companies that create these AI-enhanced companions for kids. However, Amanda Hess from The New York Times raises several important concerns. She shares her encounters with Grem, a product from the startup Curio, featuring a plush toy named Grok—distinct from the chatbot associated with Elon Musk.

In the end, Hess concludes that she “would not consider introducing Grem to my own children.” Throughout her interaction with the chatbot, she felt it was more of “a substitute for me” instead of “an enhancement over the silent teddy bear.”

She notes that while these engaging toys might divert children from screens, they suggest that “the true source of [children’s] curiosity resides within their devices.”

Ultimately, Hess permitted her children to play with Grem—after hiding the voice box. They enjoyed the activity but later voiced a desire to watch television.
