Ultimately, Hess concludes that she “would not contemplate introducing Grem to my own kids.” During her time with the chatbot, she felt it acted more like “a substitute for me” rather than “an enhancement over the quiet teddy bear.”

She notes that while these appealing toys may divert children from screens, they suggest that “the true source of [children’s] curiosity resides within their devices.”
