iPhone 17: The Slimmest Model Yet & What to Expect at Apple’s Hardware Event
Apple generally unveils its latest hardware in the autumn, and this year appears to be no different. The event is speculated to be on September 9, with expectations to reveal the iPhone 17 series, as well as updates for the Apple Watch and AirPods.
As usual, chatter is abound, with discussions about larger screens and improved cameras for the iPhone 17 models, in addition to a potential ultra-slim iPhone Air that might take the place of the Plus model.
iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max
The iPhone 17 is expected to see a significant redesign to closely resemble the Pro versions. It may have a slightly larger 6.3-inch display, an increase of 0.2 inches compared to the iPhone 16, along with a 120Hz refresh rate—an important upgrade over the current 60Hz. Additionally, it’s predicted to feature a 24-megapixel front camera and potentially new color options, including purple and green.
Leaked information points to extensive updates in the rear design of the Pro model. Concept images suggest that the three rear cameras might be arranged in a rectangular bar that spans across the device. The flash, light sensor, and microphone would be located on the far right, while the Apple logo and MagSafe charger would be centrally placed for aesthetic reasons.
Interestingly, the iPhone 17 Pro may shift materials, possibly swapping the titanium bezel surrounding the screen with aluminum, which could reduce costs while providing a lighter feel.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is likely to see fewer upgrades, with the primary change being a slightly thicker body, probably to house a larger battery—an excellent enhancement.
As per insider Instant Digital, the iPhone 17 is expected to retail at about $800, while the Pro Max is projected to be priced around $1,250. New color options for the Pro models might include dark blue and copper.

The Pro model is anticipated to have a price tag around $1,050. However, a recent leak suggests that there may be fewer storage options compared to the 16 Pro, likely cutting out the 128GB variant, leaving users with three choices: 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB, down from the usual four options.
iPhone Air
The most intriguing speculation is that Apple may present its thinnest smartphone to date, the iPhone Air, possibly replacing the iPhone Plus.
This highly anticipated device is rumored to be just 5.5 mm thick, approximately 0.08 inches slimmer than current models, boasting a 6.6-inch display.
This move seems to align with Apple’s strategy to meet the market’s demand for slimmer smartphones, following trends set by rivals like Samsung and Huawei. The iPhone Air could be thinner than the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, which measures 5.8 mm, and may also pave the way for Apple’s long-expected foldable device, projected for a September 2026 release.
While the lean design is attractive, it may entail certain sacrifices. Based on leaked renders, the Air is projected to have only one rear camera, unlike the dual cameras seen on the Plus. Additionally, there are rumors that space for a bottom speaker may be lacking, meaning audio output could solely rely on the front earpiece.
According to sources, this device might launch at $950 and be offered in shades of black, silver, and light gold.
Apple Watch Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3
Following a two-year break, many rumors are circulating about the Apple Watch Ultra 3, suggesting that significant changes could be in the pipeline. These might include faster charging, 5G capabilities, and satellite connectivity. Additionally, there are indications of a larger display.
One of the most exciting potential upgrades for both the Ultra 3 and Series 11 includes blood pressure monitoring features that would alert users when levels are precariously high or low. Apple is also reportedly contemplating introducing a sleep apnea feature. However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has indicated that these features may be delayed for further development.
Recently, Apple introduced a newly designed blood oxygen feature available for certain Series 8, 10, and Ultra devices, suggesting that the Ultra 3 will also incorporate this capability, although the company did not confirm its inclusion in watchOS 26.
The third generation of the Apple Watch SE is not anticipated to feature many substantial upgrades, aside from possibly having a larger display. Ongoing reports indicate a plastic variant may be introduced, according to Gurman.
Expected prices for the watches are $250 for the Apple Watch SE 3, $400 for the Series 11, and $800 for the Ultra 3.
AirPods Pro 3
With the AirPods Pro 2 launched in 2022, an update appears due, and Apple may be preparing to introduce new features. Speculation includes that the AirPods Pro 3 might present a more refined design, touch-sensitive controls, smaller earbuds, and a more compact case. The anticipated H3 chip may enhance active noise cancellation and adaptive audio.
