OpenAI Launches $5 ChatGPT Plan in India
OpenAI has launched a new, more affordable subscription option for ChatGPT in India called ChatGPT GO, priced at ₹399 per month (roughly $4.60). This plan is significantly less expensive compared to the ₹1,999 (approximately $23) monthly Plus Plan.
The company has recently implemented local currency pricing for all its services. With this rollout, users can also make payments via UPI (Unified Payment Interface), India’s payment system.
Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and head of ChatGPT, mentioned that this plan boosts message limits, image generation, and file uploads by tenfold compared to the free tier. Additionally, the ChatGPT Go plan enhances memory retention for more personalized responses, as noted by Turley.
“Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a significant request from users! We’re launching Go in India first and will collect feedback before expanding to other regions,” Turley commented.
In terms of currency conversion, the Plus plan exceeded $20 for Indian users when converted to local currency. The new Go plan offers a better solution for users seeking to utilize ChatGPT primarily for chatting, image generation, and file management.
Tibor Blaho, a software engineer known for accurately leaking details about forthcoming AI products, had previously hinted at this plan and its features.
Currently available only in India, OpenAI has indicated on its support page that they are planning to extend this plan to more regions.

Last month, Turley stated that ChatGPT has surpassed 700 million weekly users globally, up from 500 million in March. OpenAI introduced its improved image generator for ChatGPT in March, which contributed to increased usage in India. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently mentioned in a podcast that India is the company’s second-largest market. With the Go plan, they aim to leverage this opportunity.
According to AppFigures, an app analytics firm, India has led the way in ChatGPT app downloads across all platforms, surpassing 29 million downloads in the last 90 days. However, the app generated only $3.6 million during this timeframe from users in the country.
This initiative is expected to motivate more consumers to subscribe to ChatGPT due to its competitive pricing. Other AI companies are also striving to attract users from India’s internet user base, estimated to exceed 850 million. Last month, Perplexity partnered with network provider Airtel to offer free Perplexity Pro subscriptions. Google also introduced a free AI Pro plan for students in India for one year.
While OpenAI’s strategy does not include freebies, the introduction of local and affordable pricing is anticipated to improve the subscription conversion rate for ChatGPT in India.
