Group14 Attracts $463M Investment from SK, Porsche, and Others for EV Silicon Anodes

Group14, a startup focused on battery materials, announced on Wednesday that it has raised $463 million in funding to bolster its manufacturing capabilities, reflecting ongoing investor confidence in the electric vehicle industry.

The company specializes in the production of silicon anode materials, which significantly improve the storage capacity of lithium-ion batteries. Group14 currently operates three facilities, two of which are located in the U.S. and one in South Korea.

Despite signs of a slowdown in electric vehicle demand, the global lithium-ion battery market continues to thrive. Precedence Research predicts it will grow at an annual rate of over 15% in the next decade, potentially quintupling in size. Automakers and investors are actively seeking innovations that will enhance the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of electric vehicles.

The funding round was spearheaded by battery manufacturer SK, with additional contributions from ATL, Lightrock, Microsoft, Porsche, and OMERS. Furthermore, Group14 announced that it has “acquired full ownership” of its joint venture with SK in South Korea, which encompasses the BAM 3 factory; SK previously held a 75% stake in this venture. When asked whether the valuation of the joint venture was factored into the Series D total, Group14 spokesperson Kristen Caron mentioned that the company would not disclose further details about the funding round.

Silicon has been seen as a viable alternative to graphite, the current standard for anode materials, due to its capacity to store up to ten times more electrons. However, pure silicon anodes typically degrade with each charge and discharge due to the material’s expansion and contraction, a challenge that graphite handles more effectively.

Companies like Group14 and its competitor Sila have tackled silicon’s expansion challenges by creating structures that keep the material stable without sacrificing the overall integrity of the anode. Group14’s innovation includes a scaffold with internal voids designed to accommodate the silicon’s expansion.

This material can be blended with graphite or utilized independently. Many companies still lean towards the latter due to graphite’s inherent stability. However, increasing silicon content can significantly enhance the energy capacity of a single cell. Group14 asserts that its material can boost energy density by up to 50% and facilitate fast-charging times of under 10 minutes.
