Spotify Unveils New Feature for Personalized Playlist Transitions

Spotify has launched a thrilling feature that allows users to create more personalized playlists. On Tuesday, the company announced a custom transitions option, enabling subscribers to automatically incorporate transitions between tracks or design their own using preset styles like fade, rise, or blend, among others.

To utilize this feature, simply open any playlist and select “Mix” from the toolbar to start editing. While enhancing your tracks with various transition effects, you can adjust settings like volume, EQ, and effects, and leverage waveform and beat data to pinpoint the ideal moments in each track for seamless transitions.

Spotify revealed that it will automatically display the key and beats per minute for each track, making it easier for novice audio mixers.

This new feature is tailored for playlist enthusiasts and music lovers, who have collectively crafted nearly 9 billion playlists on Spotify.

The launch coincides with Spotify’s recent enhancements aimed at giving users better control over their listening experience. New features encompass playlist editing, genre customization for the Discover Weekly playlist, snoozing tracks, and voice commands for the AI DJ, as Spotify gears up to compete with Apple Music’s upcoming AutoMix feature, which is available in the iOS 26 developer beta and promises to allow users to mix “like a DJ.”

Premium users with access to the transitions feature can save and share their playlists on social media or invite others to collaborate on a mixed playlist.

You can toggle the mix on or off at any moment by selecting the “mix” option, allowing you to revert to a standard playlist as necessary, whether the party or workout has concluded.

For optimal mixing, Spotify suggests using tracks that facilitate smooth transitions, especially genres such as house and techno, which are known for blending seamlessly.

Similar to other playlists, these mixes can be further customized with unique cover art and new stickers and labels specifically crafted for mixed playlists.

As of today, custom transitions in playlists are accessible for most eligible Premium users globally. (However, users in certain parts of the APAC region may have to wait a little longer for this feature.) The rollout is happening gradually for those who have updated their Spotify app on both iOS and Android.
