Spotify Unveils New Feature for Personalized Playlist Transitions

Spotify has introduced an innovative feature that allows subscribers to create more tailored, personalized playlists. On Tuesday, the company launched a custom transitions option, which lets users automatically add transitions between tracks or design their own using preset styles like fade, rise, or blend, among others.

To utilize this feature, simply access any playlist and select “Mix” from the toolbar to start editing. While personalizing your tracks with various transition effects, you can adjust settings such as volume, EQ, and effects, as well as utilize the waveform and beat data to pinpoint the optimal moment in each track for a seamless transition.

Spotify has stated that it will automatically display the key and beats per minute for each track, making it easier for novice audio mixers to get started.

This new feature caters to playlist enthusiasts and music fans, who have collectively generated nearly 9 billion playlists on Spotify’s platform.

The rollout coincides with recent enhancements from Spotify aimed at increasing user control over their listening experience. Features such as playlist editing, genre customization for the Discover Weekly playlist, snoozing tracks, and voice commands to the AI DJ have been introduced, positioning Spotify to compete with Apple Music’s upcoming AutoMix feature, which is already available in the iOS 26 developer beta and promises to enable users to mix “like a DJ.”

Premium users with access to the transitions feature can save and share their playlists with friends on social media or invite others to collaborate on a mixed playlist.

You can toggle the mix on or off at any time by selecting the “mix” option, allowing you to revert to a standard playlist whenever needed, whether the party or workout has concluded.

The company recommends that for the best mixing experience, it works best with tracks designed for smooth transitions, particularly genres like house and techno, which typically blend seamlessly.

Like other playlists, these mixes can be further customized with distinctive cover art, as well as newly introduced stickers and labels specifically designed for mixed playlists.

Beginning today, custom transitions in playlists are available for most eligible Premium users globally. (Some locations in the APAC region will have to wait a little longer for this feature.) The rollout is occurring gradually for users who have updated their Spotify app on both iOS and Android.
