Sony Increases PlayStation 5 Prices Due to New Tariffs

Sony has revealed a price increase for PlayStation 5 consoles, which will be implemented on Thursday, August 21.

The company attributed this adjustment to “a challenging economic environment,” likely referencing President Trump’s tariffs on imports, resulting in a price boost of around $50. In the U.S., the PlayStation 5 will be priced at $549.99, with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition at $499.99, and the PlayStation 5 Pro at $749.99. This announcement comes after the White House declared a 15% tariff on imports from Japan on July 31.

Sony indicated that it has no intention of changing prices in other international markets and has no plans to increase accessory prices. However, the company had already raised prices for PlayStation consoles in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand in April due to similar economic factors.

In 2022, price increases affected some regions due to inflation, although U.S. prices remained stable during that period.

Other gaming industry companies have also modified their pricing structures in response to Trump’s tariffs. Microsoft stated in May that it would elevate console prices by $80 to $100, in addition to raising the prices of certain games, controllers, and accessories.

Nintendo has chosen to increase the prices of selected accessories for its upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console, while keeping the console’s price unchanged.
