UJ Ends Wits’ Unbeaten Run in Exciting Varsity Football Clash
The 2025 Varsity Football season continues to spark enthusiasm as the third round of matches took place on Thursday.
The eagerly awaited Johannesburg Derby saw Wits University face off against the University of Johannesburg, resulting in a dramatic 1-0 win for UJ, which also marked Wits’ first defeat of the season.
This outcome caused Wits to drop from first to third place with six points, while UJ climbed to second with seven points.
The Tshwane University of Technology held onto its leading position with seven points, following a convincing 3-1 victory over the Central University of Technology, which remains at the bottom of the standings without any points.
The Durban University of Technology faced challenges, suffering a 2-1 defeat against the University of the Free State at home. UFS is now in fifth place with four points, while DUT lingers in seventh.

In another matchup, North-West University and the University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) ended in a goalless draw, leaving NWU in fourth place with five points and UP-Tuks in sixth with six points.
It’s worth mentioning that UP-Tuks, CUT, and DUT are still searching for their first wins this season.
