Amazon AGI Labs Chief Unveils Groundbreaking Reverse Acquihire Approach

Last year, Amazon attracted attention by onboarding the founders of the AI startup Adept via a method known as a reverse acquihire. This strategy enables large companies to obtain skilled talent from startups while also licensing their technologies, bypassing traditional acquisition processes.

David Luan, the co-founder and former head of Adept, now leads Amazon’s new AGI Lab. In a recent interview with The Verge, journalist Alex Heath delved into Amazon’s ambitions in the AI sector, highlighting the idea of reverse acquihires.

Luan expressed his aspiration to be seen as a pioneer in AI research rather than just a dealmaker. He mentioned that it is “entirely rational” for major firms like Amazon to “capture significant talent and computational resources at this critical juncture.”

Reflecting on his shift from Adept to Amazon, Luan conveyed that he did not perceive Adept simply as “a company focused on developing smaller models.” His aim was to address “the four fundamental research challenges that still hinder AGI progress.”

“Tackling each of these challenges will require resources in the tens of billions,” he stressed. “What options do I have to meet that challenge?”
