Amazon AGI Labs Head Unveils Groundbreaking Reverse Acquihire Approach
Last year, Amazon captured attention by utilizing a reverse acquihire strategy to acquire the founders of the AI startup Adept. This innovative approach enables large corporations to draw talent from smaller firms while obtaining their technologies, avoiding the conventional acquisition path.
David Luan, co-founder and former head of Adept, now spearheads Amazon’s newly formed AGI Lab. In a recent interview with The Verge, journalist Alex Heath delved into Amazon’s aspirations in the AI landscape, particularly emphasizing the notion of reverse acquihires.
Luan expressed his ambition to be seen as a pioneer in AI research rather than simply a negotiator. He stated that it is “entirely reasonable” for major companies like Amazon to “acquire substantial talent and computational resources during this pivotal time.”
Reflecting on his move from Adept to Amazon, Luan noted that he never regarded Adept solely as “a company focused on developing smaller models.” His aim was to tackle “the four major research challenges that still hinder AGI progress.”
“Tackling each of these obstacles will necessitate resources in the tens of billions,” he stressed. “What other options do I have to confront that challenge?”
