Amazon AGI Labs Leader Unveils Game-Changing Reverse Acquihire Strategy

Last year, Amazon attracted attention by acquiring the founders of the AI startup Adept through a method known as a reverse acquihire. This strategy enables large corporations to draw in talented professionals from smaller companies while also obtaining their technologies, bypassing traditional acquisition techniques.

David Luan, co-founder and former head of Adept, now leads Amazon’s new AGI Lab. In a recent discussion with The Verge, journalist Alex Heath delved into Amazon’s aspirations in the AI field, focusing on the idea of reverse acquihires.

Luan expressed his ambition to be seen as a pioneer in AI research rather than just a dealmaker. He noted that it is “perfectly rational” for large companies like Amazon to “acquire significant talent and computational resources at this critical juncture.”

Looking back on his shift from Adept to Amazon, Luan mentioned that he never regarded Adept solely as “a company focused on developing smaller models.” His goal was to address “the four main research obstacles that still hinder AGI progress.”

“Tackling each of these issues will necessitate resources in the tens of billions,” he underscored. “What other options do I have to confront that challenge?”
