Amazon AGI Labs Leader Unveils Groundbreaking Reverse Acquihire Approach

Last year, Amazon grabbed headlines by acquiring the founders of the AI startup Adept through a reverse acquihire strategy. This tactic enables large corporations to attract talent from smaller companies while also securing their technologies, bypassing traditional acquisition routes.

David Luan, co-founder and former leader of Adept, now heads Amazon’s new AGI Lab. In a recent interview with The Verge, journalist Alex Heath examined Amazon’s aspirations in the AI landscape, focusing on the idea of reverse acquihires.

Luan expressed his ambition to be seen as a pioneer in AI research rather than just a dealmaker. He claimed that it is “perfectly rational” for major firms like Amazon to “acquire significant talent and computational resources during this crucial time.”

In reflecting on his move from Adept to Amazon, Luan mentioned he never regarded Adept as merely “a company dedicated to building smaller models.” His objective was to confront “the four key research obstacles that continue to hinder AGI progress.”

“To tackle each of these challenges will demand resources in the tens of billions,” he stressed. “What other options do I have to address that problem?”
