Arkham Reveals UAE’s $700 Million Bitcoin Holdings from Mining Activities
The UAE has emerged as a notable holder of Bitcoin, employing a distinct strategy. The $700 million in Bitcoin identified by Arkham wasn’t bought or seized; rather, it was mined from a facility constructed in a mere six months, showcasing an industrial approach to crypto reserves.
Summary
- Arkham has discovered $700 million in Bitcoin owned by the UAE, mined through Citadel Mining.
- The UAE now ranks as the fourth-largest government Bitcoin holder, behind the U.S., China, and the U.K.
On August 25, the blockchain intelligence firm Arkham uncovered a collection of Bitcoin (BTC) addresses containing approximately $700 million in BTC, directly associating them with the UAE government.
These findings revealed that these assets were not acquired in the public market or through confiscation; they were operationally mined by Citadel, a company predominantly owned by a conglomerate connected to the Abu Dhabi royal family.
This discovery marks a first for a sovereign wealth operation of this kind, supported by correlating on-chain mining activities with satellite imagery of a facility constructed on Al Reem Island in 2022, as stated by Arkham.
The scale and strategy of a state-controlled Bitcoin miner
According to Arkham’s analysis, the extent of the UAE’s mining project is substantial. Their research indicates that the state-supported operation has mined approximately 9,300 Bitcoin since its inception. Currently, the entity retains at least 6,300 BTC, underscoring a measured, long-term holding strategy rather than immediate asset liquidation.
This mining-oriented accumulation strategy positions the UAE among the most significant government Bitcoin holders globally. Per Arkham’s data, the UAE now ranks as the fourth-largest government entity by Bitcoin holdings, following the United States, China, and the United Kingdom, while notably exceeding more widely recognized national holdings, such as those of El Salvador.
In the broader scope of government Bitcoin holdings, tracked by platforms like BitcoinTreasuries.Net, the UAE’s ranking is essential. Their data suggests that twelve government entities hold a total of 526,353 BTC, valued at over $59 billion.
The majority of these assets are concentrated among a select few major players. The United States government leads with 198,021 BTC, closely trailed by China with 190,000 BTC, and the United Kingdom with 61,245 BTC. The UAE’s entrance into this elite sector through a distinctly organic approach challenges traditional paradigms regarding how a nation builds a digital asset reserve.
