The Boring Company Launches Trials of Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ in Las Vegas Tunnels
Elon Musk’s The Boring Company has started testing Full Self-Driving (Supervised) technology created by Tesla in the tunnels connecting Las Vegas’ Convention Center with nearby hotels, according to a report by Fortune.
Steve Hill, the CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, stated that The Boring Company has been assessing the software in Tesla vehicles for several months, always having safety drivers on hand. Nevertheless, Hill mentioned that a broader implementation of the technology is still “a ways off.”
The Tesla tunnels have been in operation for nearly four years, and although The Boring Company aims to expand their reach throughout Las Vegas, they presently only cover a limited area beneath and around the Convention Center.
Despite Tesla’s recent launch of a limited robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, and a similar offering in San Francisco, Musk’s positive comments on the technology’s capabilities indicate that safety drivers must still “periodically” take control of the vehicles, as noted by Hill.
In theory, the uncomplicated tunnels should be suitable for Tesla’s autonomous software. The main challenge appears to be managing passenger pick-up and drop-off at various underground stations. Hill noted that the bright lighting and the semi-smooth rock walls within The Boring Company’s tunnels have created challenges for the driver assistance system as the vehicles try to navigate “areas that are tough for them.”
