TikTok Launches Voice Notes and Image Sharing in Direct Messages
TikTok has unveiled new features designed to enhance user interaction via direct messages (DMs), as reported by TechCrunch on Friday. Users can now send voice messages and share up to nine images or videos in both one-on-one and group chats on the platform.
These updates aim to position TikTok as more than just an entertainment app, fostering a space for ongoing interaction that goes beyond simply sharing TikTok videos. Additionally, these features align TikTok’s messaging experience more closely with top social apps and services.
With the voice messaging feature, users can record audio messages of up to 60 seconds. This capability is similar to those offered by other platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Apple’s Messages.
Incorporating voice notes into DMs is a sensible decision for TikTok, particularly given the growing preference among younger users, especially Gen Z, for this mode of communication.
TikTok announced that this feature will begin rolling out in the coming weeks.

When sharing images and videos, users can either take new content with their camera or choose from existing media in their camera roll. They also have the option to edit content before sending it.
To enhance user safety, images or videos cannot be sent as the first message by a new contact. For example, if someone initiates contact for the first time, they can only share content already available on TikTok, rather than personal photos or videos.

Additionally, when users opt to send photos or videos, TikTok will encourage them to consider their privacy and the suitability of sharing content with particular individuals.
For user safety, direct messaging is limited for individuals under 16, while extra precautions are in place for users aged 16 to 18. TikTok has automated systems that identify and restrict images containing nudity, preventing both the sender from sending such content and the recipient from viewing it.
Users aged 18 and above can enable this safety feature within their app settings.
TikTok views these enhancements as an opportunity for users to express their creativity and connect with others in familiar ways.
This development is part of TikTok’s ongoing efforts to improve its messaging capabilities. Last year, the platform introduced group chats, enabling communication among up to 32 users at once. Additionally, TikTok recently launched Creator Chat Rooms, offering a designated space for creators and their followers to engage.
