Vocal Image Leverages AI to Improve Communication Skills

Vocal Image, an innovative startup based in Estonia with 4 million app downloads, focuses on improving voice and communication abilities through AI-powered coaching. CEO Nick Lakhoika passionately shares the company’s mission, which has engaged 160,000 active users.

Originally from Belarus, Lakhoika moved to Estonia without knowing English, facing obstacles like speaking anxiety. Despite this, he excelled in numerous pitch competitions for his voice coaching project, drawing from his own experiences as he explained to TechCrunch.

“I often faced ridicule for my unclear speech during my school years,” Lakhoika recalled. In his early twenties, he recognized the life-changing benefits of voice training while working with vocal coach Maryna “Rusia” Shukiurava.

Inspired to assist others dealing with similar issues, they created a YouTube channel that led to the development of Vocal Image, which offers a subscription-based app as a budget-friendly alternative to traditional coaching, accessible from home. “You can confidently explore unique movements and sounds,” Lakhoika emphasized.

Vocal Image features an interactive library packed with tongue twisters, breathing exercises, and gestures, utilizing AI for automated feedback and personalized insights, thanks to co-founder and CTO Mikalai Karaliou, as highlighted by Lakhoika.

The app’s guided experiences are primarily designed to enhance professional skills such as leadership, public speaking, and presentation techniques. Vocal Image also assists individuals looking to boost their self-confidence, notably within the LGBTQ community, a cause that recipients Shukiurava champions in Belarus.

Though the founders hail from Belarus, they represent a wider community of expatriates who fled due to severe crackdowns on anti-regime protests led by President Alexander Lukashenko. Lakhoika selected Estonia for its favorable business environment, which has greatly benefited the startup.

Shortly after arriving in Tallinn, Vocal Image joined the local accelerator Startup Wise Guys and quickly gained a reputation as a success story due to its rapid growth. Lakhoika noted that the startup achieved $6.5 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) from less than $1 million in pre-seed investment.

Recently, the company raised $3.6 million in a seed funding round led by French edtech venture capital firm Educapital, with additional support from Estonia’s Specialist VC and Germany’s Generations Fund, as reported by TechCrunch.

As of August, the startup announced $12 million in ARR and around 50,000 paying subscribers, according to Lakhoika. With a team of 20, mainly comprising Belarusian expatriates, Vocal Image aims to grow its development team and introduce language options beyond English, including Spanish, German, French, Ukrainian, and Russian.

This recent funding follows Vocal Image’s recognition as one of the top five winners in the European AI Startup Program by Hugging Face, Meta, and Scaleway amid increasing competition. For instance, the edtech company Headway recently debuted an AI-enhanced speech trainer for its social skills app, Skillsta. However, Vocal Image is well-positioned to leverage its GDPR-compliant AI functionalities.

Processing close to 35,000 recordings daily, Vocal Image has amassed over 1 million real-voice samples. This dataset is further enriched by a community feature called Voice Rating, which allows users to evaluate whether others’ voices sound “confident” or “childlike.”

Such a dataset is vital for applications like Vocal Image to enhance their effectiveness and can also aid AI startups in advancing their synthetic voice technology, providing added momentum for the startup beyond its B2C focus.
