Leader of the United Independent Movement, Neil De Beer, Passes Away; DA Offers Condolences
Cape Town – It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Neil de Beer, the leader of the United Independent Movement (UIM) political party.
On Saturday, 30 August 2025, the UIM confirmed this tragic news, stating: “We are overwhelmed with grief as we honor the legacy of our esteemed leader and dear friend, Neil de Beer.”
The UIM further shared: “Today, we carry the heavy burden of sadness while celebrating an extraordinary individual, a friend whose generosity has touched many lives, and a leader whose vision inspired us all.”
“This is a profound loss, as we have not only lost a mentor but a symbol of hope and compassion.”
De Beer, who served as a national security advisor to Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically elected president, originally founded the UIM as a civil society movement before evolving it into a political party.
Dissatisfied with the African National Congress, the former uMkhonto we Sizwe member created the UIM.
In a March 2021 interview, De Beer expressed that he and his supporters were “wearied” by the “ultra-left and ultra-right” factions in South African politics, asserting that he and his party represented the “moderate middle.”
Friends and family shared their sympathies, noting that De Beer fought valiantly until the very end.
In a statement regarding the UIM president’s passing, the Democratic Alliance (DA) commented: “With Neil de Beer’s departure, South Africa has lost an essential voice for change.”
The DA added in a statement to The Bulrushes: “While his bold and decisive methods may have stirred controversy, they resonated with many.”
“His strong beliefs and dynamic character made him a significant figure and a treasured ally in the Multi-Party Charter.”
“The DA will fondly remember his contributions to the Charter.”
The DA extended “heartfelt condolences to the UIM” and added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
“In life, he radiated boundless energy. May he now find everlasting peace.”
