Neil De Beer, Leader of the United Independent Movement, Passes Away; DA Expresses Condolences
Cape Town – It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Neil de Beer, a distinguished leader of the United Independent Movement (UIM) political party.
On Saturday, 30 August 2025, the UIM released this heartbreaking news, stating: “As we honor the legacy of our beloved leader and dear friend, Neil de Beer, we are overwhelmed with sorrow and profound grief.”
The UIM further remarked: “Today, we celebrate an extraordinary individual, a compassionate friend who impacted countless lives, and a leader whose vision inspired us all.”
“This is a significant loss; we mourn not only the absence of a mentor but also that of a beacon of hope and kindness.”
De Beer was the national security advisor to Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically elected president, and initially established the UIM as a civil society movement before it evolved into a political party.
Disenchanted with the African National Congress, he founded the UIM following his tenure with uMkhonto we Sizwe.
In a March 2021 interview, De Beer expressed that he and his supporters felt “worn out” by the extremes of South African politics, asserting that he and his party represented the “moderate middle.”
Friends and family have shared their condolences, acknowledging that De Beer fought valiantly until the end.
The Democratic Alliance (DA), reflecting on the loss of the UIM leader, stated: “South Africa has lost a vital advocate for change with the passing of Neil de Beer.”
The DA further conveyed in a message to The Bulrushes: “While his bold and decisive methods may have sparked discussions, they resonated deeply with many.”
“His steadfast beliefs and dynamic presence made him a notable figure and a treasured ally within the Multi-Party Charter.”
“The DA will honor his contributions to the Charter.”
