Neil De Beer, Leader of the United Independent Movement, Passes Away; DA Offers Condolences
Cape Town – We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Neil de Beer, a respected figure and leader of the United Independent Movement (UIM) political party.
On Saturday, 30 August 2025, the UIM announced this tragic news, stating: “As we reflect on the legacy of our cherished leader and dear friend, Neil de Beer, we are profoundly saddened.”
The UIM continued: “Today, we mourn while also honoring an extraordinary individual, a friend whose kindness touched many lives, and a leader whose vision inspired us all.”
“This is a significant loss; we have lost a mentor as well as a beacon of hope and compassion.”
De Beer served as the national security advisor to Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected president of South Africa, and initially founded the UIM as a civil society initiative before evolving it into a political movement.
Disillusioned with the African National Congress, he established the UIM following his time with uMkhonto we Sizwe.
In a March 2021 interview, De Beer expressed that he and his supporters felt “exhausted” by the political extremes in South Africa, emphasizing that he and his party represented the “moderate middle.”
Friends and family have conveyed their condolences, remarking that De Beer fought valiantly until the very end.
The Democratic Alliance (DA), in a statement regarding the loss of the UIM leader, commented: “South Africa has lost a vital voice for change with the passing of Neil de Beer.”
The DA further stated to The Bulrushes: “Although his bold and decisive style may have sparked controversy, it resonated with many.”
“His strong beliefs and dynamic presence made him a significant figure and a valued partner within the Multi-Party Charter.”
“The DA will fondly remember his contributions to the Charter.”
The DA extended their “heartfelt condolences to the UIM” and remarked: “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
“In life, he displayed boundless energy. May he now find eternal peace.”
