UK Age Verification Law: Impact on Compliant Websites and Advantages of Non-Compliance

The United Kingdom has commenced enforcing the age-verification requirements set forth in the Online Safety Act. As reported by The Washington Post, this initiative is already significantly affecting website traffic.

Under U.K. regulations, adult websites must confirm the ages of their users through methods like facial recognition and driver’s license scans. Furthermore, online platforms must ensure the safeguarding of minors from adult content, prompting sites like Bluesky and Reddit to adopt age checks for certain users.

To evaluate the impact of this legislation, The Post analyzed the 90 most-visited adult websites, using U.K. visitor data from Similarweb. The findings showed that 14 sites have not yet implemented age verification. Remarkably, all 14 have experienced a significant surge in traffic, with one site reporting a twofold increase in visits compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, many websites have publicly pledged to adhere to the law while also expressing their opposition, sharing links to petitions for repeal or providing guidance on how to circumvent the regulations.

John Scott-Railton, a researcher at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab, told The Post that this scenario illustrates “the law of unintended consequences,” stressing that the legislation “reduces traffic to compliant sites while directing users toward those without age verification.”
