UK Age Verification Law: Impact on Compliant Websites and Advantages of Non-Compliance

The United Kingdom has commenced the enforcement of age-verification requirements set forth in the Online Safety Act. As reported by The Washington Post, this initiative is already noticeably affecting website traffic.

Per U.K. regulations, adult websites are obligated to verify their users’ ages using methods like facial recognition and driver’s license scans. Moreover, online platforms must ensure minors are shielded from adult content, prompting sites such as Bluesky and Reddit to implement age checks for certain users.

To evaluate the impact of this legislation, The Post analyzed the 90 most-visited adult websites, using visitor statistics from Similarweb specific to the U.K. The findings indicated that 14 sites have not yet adopted age verification, with all 14 experiencing a significant boost in traffic; one site reported a twofold increase in visits compared to the previous year.

In the meantime, many websites have publicly pledged to comply with the law while simultaneously expressing their objections, sharing links to petitions for repeal or providing tips on how to circumvent the regulations.

John Scott-Railton, a researcher at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab, commented to The Post that this scenario illustrates “the law of unintended consequences,” emphasizing that the legislation “diminishes traffic to compliant sites while diverting users to those lacking age verification.”
