United Independent Movement Leader Neil De Beer Passes Away; DA Offers Condolences
Cape Town – Neil de Beer, the leader of the United Independent Movement (UIM) political party, has tragically passed away.
On Saturday, 30 August 2025, the UIM confirmed this sad news, stating: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our respected leader and friend, Neil De Beer.”
The UIM continued: “Today, our hearts are heavy with grief as we bid farewell to an extraordinary person, a friend whose kindness touched numerous lives, and a leader whose vision inspired us all.”
“This loss is monumental, as we have lost not just a mentor, but a beacon of hope and compassion.”
De Beer, who served as a national security advisor to Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically elected President, initially founded the UIM as a civil society movement before evolving it into a political party.
Disillusioned with the African National Congress, the former uMkhonto we Sizwe member established the UIM.
In a March 2021 interview, De Beer expressed that he and his supporters were “tired” of the “ultra-left and the ultra-right” in South African politics, asserting that he and his party represented the “moderate middle.”
Friends and family shared their sorrow, noting that De Beer fought bravely until the end.
Commenting on the loss of UIM’s president, the Democratic Alliance (DA) stated: “In Neil de Beer’s passing, South Africa has lost a vital voice for change.”
In a statement to The Bulrushes, the DA remarked: “With his steadfast and often courageous approach, De Beer may have stirred controversy, but he also connected with many.”
“His strong beliefs and bold personality made him a formidable figure and a valued partner in the Multi-Party Charter.”
“The DA will cherish his contributions to the Charter.”
The DA also expressed “sincere condolences to the UIM” and shared: “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
“In life, he was a man of limitless energy. May he now find peace in eternal rest.”
