UK Age Verification Law: Impact on Compliant Websites and Advantages of Non-Compliance

The United Kingdom has started to implement age-verification requirements as specified in the Online Safety Act. As reported by The Washington Post, this initiative is already affecting website traffic significantly.

According to U.K. regulations, adult websites are required to verify the age of their users through methods such as facial recognition and scans of driver’s licenses. Furthermore, online platforms must take measures to shield minors from adult content, resulting in sites like Bluesky and Reddit enforcing age checks for certain users.

To evaluate the impact of this law, The Post examined the 90 most-visited adult websites, analyzing visitor statistics from Similarweb specifically for the U.K. Findings indicated that 14 sites have yet to adopt age verification, and all 14 have seen a significant surge in traffic, with one site reporting a doubling of visitors from the previous year.

In the meantime, several websites have publicly committed to adhering to the regulations while expressing their dissent, sharing links to petitions aimed at repeal or offering suggestions on how to circumvent the rules.

John Scott-Railton, a researcher at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab, remarked to The Post that the situation exemplifies “the law of unintended consequences,” emphasizing that the legislation “diminishes traffic to compliant sites while directing users towards those lacking age verification.”
