WordPress Launches Telex: An Experimental AI Development Tool
WordPress, the web publishing platform, is launching an early edition of an AI development tool that CEO Matt Mullenweg described as a “V0 or Lovable, specifically for WordPress.” The phrase “V0 and Lovable” references popular “vibe coding” services that employ prompt-driven AI interfaces for software development. Mullenweg introduced the innovative WordPress AI tool, called Telex, during the WordCamp US 2025 conference in Portland last week, alongside numerous other AI projects.
During his keynote address, Mullenweg provided a brief demonstration of how Telex allows users to create Gutenberg blocks—modular pieces like text, images, and columns that make up a WordPress site. He illustrated how a developer leveraged the new tool to produce a simple marketing animation.
Telex is presently accessible at its own domain, telex.automattic.ai, and is labeled as “experimental.” Users can create a content block by inputting a prompt, which is then provided as a .zip file. This file can be installed as a plugin on a WordPress website or utilized in WordPress Playground, the platform that permits users to run WordPress in a web browser on any device without the need for hosting.

This rollout follows WordPress’s announcement earlier this year about forming an AI team focused on creating AI products that fit the company’s long-term vision.
Early testers have indicated that Telex has areas for enhancement, as several trial projects encountered problems or needed additional adjustments to operate effectively.
While Mullenweg highlighted that Telex is still a prototype, he shared a positive outlook on the capability of AI to support WordPress’s mission in the future.
“When we consider democratized publishing, it’s fundamental to WordPress’s mission; simplifying tasks that were once complex and demanded coding expertise into accessible functions for everyone. It’s available in a completely open format, in every language, at little cost, and open source—we genuinely own it and have rights to it,” Mullenweg remarked.

Mullenweg acknowledged that some aspects of AI’s evolution might feel unsettling, particularly amid conversations about the technology potentially being a bubble. Nevertheless, he maintains a sense of anticipation.
“At the core, there’s a fundamental element that is tremendously empowering,” he stated regarding AI. “It’s an exhilarating time to be building for WordPress.”

Additionally, Mullenweg introduced a more straightforward AI tool he developed in just a few hours during Contributor Day, which functions as a WordPress help assistant within the browser. He also mentioned his favorite AI browser—Perplexity’s Comet—that enables users to interact with WordPress through its interface.
Regarding the legal challenges the company faced over the past year, Mullenweg provided a brief update. The company is currently in a dispute with hosting provider WP Engine, which Mullenweg claims is profiting from WordPress’s efforts without adequate contributions. He’s pushing for WP Engine to license the WordPress trademark, asserting that it misleads customers about its ties to the company.
“The brief update is that it’s progressing through legal channels. We have faith in the fairness of the courts,” Mullenweg reported. “There was a settlement conference, which I attended; the other CEO did not. It’s making its way through that process, and that’s all I’ll say on this ongoing matter.”
