Hundreds of Nurses Mark Graduation from Gauteng College of Nursing

Johannesburg – This week, the Gauteng College of Nursing (GCON) is proudly commemorating the graduation of approximately 940 nurses.

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) has announced that the graduation ceremonies will take place from 2 to 4 September 2025, at both the Bonalesedi Nursing Campus and the Ga-Rankuwa Campus.

This year’s cohort includes graduates from a variety of programmes, including:

• 493 students who have earned the Diploma in Nursing (R.171)
• 137 graduates with an Advanced Diploma in Midwifery (R1497)
• 310 individuals from Postgraduate Diploma Programmes (R635), specializing in areas such as Primary Care Nursing, Child Nursing, Adult Critical Care Nursing, and Midwifery.

The GDoH reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all R.171 nurses are registered with the South African Nursing Council.

To date, 396 nursing graduates have successfully registered and are ready to make an impact in the healthcare sector.

“GCON has made notable progress in its goal of training highly qualified and competent nurses,” stated MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.

“Starting with an initial intake of 200 candidates for the Diploma in Nursing (R.171), we have seen that number rise to 550 in 2022.

“This trend highlights our commitment to increasing the number of skilled professionals entering the healthcare workforce.”

The MEC also noted: “I extend my congratulations to all graduates and encourage them to uphold the values they have learned, serving with compassion, integrity, and a commitment to excellence.”

According to the department, since obtaining its accreditation in November 2019, GCON has established itself as a leader in nursing education, ensuring that capable and well-trained nurses are entering the healthcare workforce.

With six accredited campuses, the college has effectively introduced programmes that align with the Higher Education Qualifications Sub Framework and the National Qualifications Framework, emphasizing the importance of quality education in nursing.
