CoreWeave Acquires AI Training Startup OpenPipe

CoreWeave, a provider of cloud servers for leading companies focused on AI model training, has announced its intention to acquire OpenPipe, a two-year-old startup supported by Y Combinator that aids businesses in creating customized AI agents through reinforcement learning.

“Reinforcement learning is increasingly pivotal in improving performance for agentic and reasoning tasks,” remarked Brian Venturo, co-founder of CoreWeave, in a statement to TechCrunch. “By combining OpenPipe’s innovative self-learning tools with CoreWeave’s high-performance AI cloud, we are enhancing our platform to provide developers at AI labs and beyond a substantial edge in building scalable intelligent systems.”

The specific terms of the acquisition between CoreWeave and OpenPipe remain undisclosed. In March 2024, OpenPipe, based in Seattle, successfully secured $6.7 million in a seed funding round with contributions from Costanoa Ventures, Y Combinator, Google DeepMind’s Logan Kilpatrick, GitHub co-founder Tom Preston-Werner, and GitHub Copilot co-creator Alex Graveley.

This acquisition represents CoreWeave’s latest effort to expand its capabilities, following their March acquisition of the AI developer platform Weights & Biases. OpenPipe is recognized for its widely-used open-source toolkit for developing AI agents called ART (Agent Reinforcement Trainer). While many of CoreWeave’s largest clients comprise renowned AI labs like OpenAI, the company is also targeting smaller enterprises.

A growing number of AI labs and startups are developing enterprise solutions centered on reinforcement learning, which incentivizes AI models based on accurate responses. This strategy has proven effective in enhancing an AI model’s performance for specific tasks; the objective with these enterprise solutions is to train AI agents customized to the unique needs of individual companies.

Such customized training requires substantial computing resources, and through the acquisition of OpenPipe, CoreWeave aims to both enable and offer these services. The OpenPipe team will integrate into CoreWeave, with existing OpenPipe customers transitioning to become CoreWeave clients.
