Instagram Reaches 3 Billion Monthly Active Users and Will Test New Feed Control Features

Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram’s Head Adam Mosseri have announced that Instagram has achieved 3 billion monthly active users.

This milestone signifies a remarkable advancement for the Meta-owned platform, which hit 1 billion users back in 2018.

“Most of our growth in recent years has stemmed from DMs, Reels, and recommendations,” Mosseri mentioned in an Instagram video. “As such, we will continue to focus on these features and realign the app around DMs, Reels, and recommendations in the coming months.”

While the shift toward short-form video and recommendations from non-followed accounts has spurred Instagram’s growth, it has also caused frustration among users who value content from their personal connections.

In the upcoming months, Mosseri indicated that Instagram will test a feature enabling users to modify the content recommendation algorithm for Reels, with a similar option planned for other content feeds later on.

In a preview of the new feature shared by Mosseri, users will be able to select topics they’re interested in.

For example, based on user behavior, Instagram could highlight topics such as college football, film photography, and chess. If a user is no longer interested in college football, they can opt to turn off that specific topic from their algorithm. Furthermore, Instagram is set to update its bottom navigation bar by replacing the content upload button with direct access to DMs.
