What to Expect at OpenAI’s DevDay 2025 and How to Watch Live

OpenAI is preparing for its third annual developer conference, DevDay 2025, happening this Monday. The company expects to welcome over 1,500 attendees at Fort Mason in San Francisco for what they call their “largest event yet,” which will feature announcements, keynotes from OpenAI executives, and a fireside chat between CEO Sam Altman and renowned Apple designer Jony Ive.

DevDay 2025 is poised to highlight OpenAI’s growing influence in Silicon Valley, positioning itself alongside major players like Apple, Google, and Meta. The company is in the process of developing an AI device, a social media platform, and an AI-driven browser to compete with Chrome. This marks a notable evolution from their first DevDay in 2023, which primarily focused on ChatGPT and an API to access its models.

Nevertheless, OpenAI is encountering increased competition in its quest for developers.

In the last year, AI models from Anthropic and Google have demonstrated impressive advancements in coding and web design tasks. To remain competitive, OpenAI has been forced to provide better AI models at lower prices. Moreover, Meta has formed a strong team of AI experts in its new division, Meta Superintelligence Labs, which could present a future challenge to OpenAI.

During the inaugural DevDay in 2023, OpenAI unveiled the new AI model, GPT-4 Turbo, while Altman shared his vision for an AI agents marketplace called the GPT Store. Shortly after, Altman experienced a brief ousting as CEO but returned following intense negotiations. In 2024, OpenAI hosted a more low-key conference, announcing notable developer enhancements, including an API for AI voice applications, but little else.

Although no product launches have been confirmed for DevDay 2025, speculation is rampant. OpenAI may finally unveil the AI-powered browser it’s been working on or provide updates on the AI device being developed in collaboration with Ive and former Apple executives. There could also be news regarding the GPT Store, which has seen little discussion since its initial introduction several years ago.

DevDay 2025 kicks off at 10 am PT on October 6, featuring an opening keynote from Altman, who is expected to deliver “announcements, live demonstrations, and a vision for how developers are shaping the future with AI.” The keynote will be approximately one hour long and will be live-streamed on OpenAI’s YouTube channel.

This will be the only session available for live streaming for remote viewers.

Attendees in person can anticipate on-stage presentations and discussions featuring Cursor co-founder Aman Sanger, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, and Andreessen Horowitz Partner Kimberly Tan, among others. Several OpenAI team members will also share insights into their projects, including model behavior researcher Laurentia Romaniuk and Codex lead Alexander Embiricos.

Additionally, attendees can look forward to a variety of AI-powered exhibits at DevDay 2025. One such exhibit is “Sora Cinema,” described as a “cozy mini-theater with popcorn,” showcasing short films created by OpenAI’s video model, Sora. Plans are also in place for a phone booth featuring a “living portrait” of the legendary computer scientist Alan Turing that engages in conversation.

To wrap up DevDay, two major events are scheduled for later in the afternoon. While these two segments won’t be live-streamed, they will be available on YouTube later that same day.

At 3:15 pm PT, the “Developer State of the Union” will feature OpenAI President Greg Brockman and Olivier Godement, who oversees product for the OpenAI Platform. They are expected to “demo new capabilities” and share insights into what’s on the horizon for developers.

Finally, at 4:15 pm PT, Altman and Ive will partake in a “Closing Fireside Chat” to delve into the “craft of building in the age of AI.” This conversation is anticipated to last around 45 minutes.
