xAI Names Anthony Armstrong, Former Morgan Stanley Banker, as CFO

A report from the Financial Times, citing anonymous sources, reveals that Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has appointed Anthony Armstrong, a former Morgan Stanley banker, as its new chief financial officer.

Armstrong, who previously advised Musk during the Twitter acquisition, will oversee the financial operations of both xAI and X following their merger in April, according to the report. He has been working with xAI for several weeks and has now officially assumed the position of CFO, the FT noted.

Since the exit of former finance head Mike Liberatore in July, xAI has been without a CFO. Armstrong’s appointment comes amid a period of significant executive turnover at both xAI and X.

In August, xAI’s general counsel, Robert Keele, resigned after serving in the role for over a year. Senior attorney Raghu Rao also left around the same time, while co-founder Igor Babuschkin announced his departure to start a venture capital firm focused on AI safety research. Furthermore, Linda Yaccarino, who was the CEO of X, resigned in July.

Armstrong will be stepping in for Mahmoud Reza Banki, the current CFO of X, who is also expected to exit the organization, as reported by the FT.

xAI has yet to comment on these transitions.
