Searching for the Term ‘Disregard’ Is No Longer Feasible

This week, Google unveiled a thoroughly redesigned Search experience, emphasizing AI-generated summaries while pushing the classic “10 blue links” further down the interface. Nevertheless, the vast scope of Google Search uncovers several instances that the company seems to have ignored.

For instance, here’s what you might experience if you search for the term “disregard” on Google.

Google has been criticized on social media regarding this issue, and the reasons are clear. As shown, the link to Merriam-Webster remains, but users must scroll through a considerable amount of empty space. For many, that single result may be the only visible content. Additionally, the AI-generated response provides no real advantage for users searching for “disregard.” It appears more like a bug than a feature.

In contrast, here’s how the same search term is displayed in Bing, which has adopted a more cautious stance on AI summaries. Although not perfect, it still offers relevant information.

After nearly 15 years as a tech journalist, I can’t recall a time when a Bing search result was more advantageous than one from Google. It seems there’s a first for everything!
