SpaceX Postpones First Starship V3 Launch Right Before Liftoff

SpaceX has postponed the inaugural launch of its third-generation Starship rocket system from its headquarters in Starbase, Texas, with plans for a new attempt on Friday.

This launch is vital for SpaceX, marking the first significant test of the upgraded Starship V3 hardware and occurring at a crucial financial juncture for the company. Following a recent IPO filing, SpaceX is expected to go public soon, increasing the pressure to showcase meaningful progress in its next-generation rocket program.

This will be Starship’s 12th launch and the first flight since October 2025. In the interval, SpaceX has concentrated on developing and testing the third iteration of Starship, which has encountered several obstacles. Notably, in November, one of the initial V3 boosters experienced an explosion during testing.

The launch faced multiple delays, with the company making attempts to lift off toward the end of its designated launch window. With Starship and its enormous booster fully fueled, the countdown reached under T-40 seconds, but various rocket and launchpad system issues prompted several countdown resets.

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, remarked on X that the “hydraulic pin holding the [launch] tower arm in place did not retract,” indicating that the company aims to try again on Friday at 5:30 p.m. local time, provided the issue is resolved tonight.

This latest iteration of Starship features notable enhancements in vehicle design and launchpad infrastructure. Among the key updates are SpaceX’s third-generation Raptor engines, which deliver improved thrust with a more efficient design. The new booster has been modified to facilitate easier capture by the launch tower and has one grid fin less.

Additional improvements focus on boosting the reliability of this Starship model. The revised design aims to prevent propellant leaks from accumulating in specific areas of the upper stage, a challenge noted in several prior test flights. The goal is for the entire vehicle to be completely reusable, similar to SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.

If this flight proceeds as planned, it won’t meet all the objectives set for validating Starship V3. SpaceX does not intend to recover either the booster or the Starship itself; both are projected to execute “soft landings” in water—the booster in the Atlantic Ocean and Starship in the Indian Ocean. Furthermore, Starship will not achieve a true Earth orbit, necessitating another mission or two to validate its upper stage for commercial payload delivery.

For SpaceX, establishing Starship V3 as a reliable launch system is crucial, especially with its substantial investment in Starlink, which recorded $11 billion in revenue last year according to its recent IPO filing. While SpaceX has demonstrated Starship’s ability to deploy dummy versions of its upgraded Starlink satellites in earlier missions, it has yet to send a functional payload into space using the new rocket system.
