Audio Generation App Huxe, Developed by Former NotebookLM Team, Shuts Down Operations

Huxe, an application created by the former developers of NotebookLM, which allowed users to generate podcasts or podcast series across various topics, is set to shut down. This decision follows Spotify’s recent launch of a similar personal podcast feature.

The startup has announced that it will be removing the app from both the App Store and Play Store. Users currently using the app will have one additional week before the company deletes all associated user data. The reason behind the shutdown has not been disclosed.

“We have decided to discontinue Huxe. The team is exploring new opportunities, and there will be no further development for this product,” the communication sent to users stated.

The consumer AI landscape is intensely competitive, with startup products often assimilated as features within larger corporations. The trend of creating podcasts for educational purposes is continuing on a similar trajectory. Following the popularization of this feature by NotebookLM, major companies such as Adobe, Amazon, ElevenLabs, Meta, and most recently Spotify have integrated it into their offerings. Google has also launched a feature enabling users to create podcasts based on their Discover feeds.

Founded in late 2024 by ex-Google team members Raiza Martin, Jason Spielman, and Stephen Hughes, Huxe raised $4.6 million in funding from Conviction, Genius Ventures, Figma CEO Dylan Field, and the chief scientist at Google Research, Jeff Dean.

Other startups like Oboe, initiated by co-founders of Anchor and former Spotify executives, and Sun, which is part of an a16z speedrun cohort, are striving to establish user bases focused on audio-driven learning.

As AI technologies advance, their ability to transform content from one format to another—whether text to audio or audio to video—enhances. Companies focused on just one conversion method may encounter challenges in sustaining long-term user engagement and revenue streams.

The swift pace at which companies are rolling out new features owing to AI advancements could significantly impact startups. For Huxe, the capability to create podcasts on specific topics has evolved into a standard feature across many applications and services, making it increasingly difficult to attract a sizable audience willing to pay for their offerings.
