SpaceX’s Starlink Partners with American Airlines, Enhancing IPO Outlook

On Tuesday, American Airlines revealed plans to equip more than 500 narrow-body Airbus aircraft with Starlink beginning next year, adding to the roster of airlines choosing SpaceX’s division for inflight Wi-Fi services.

This partnership provides not only a financial boost for Starlink, which serves as SpaceX’s satellite communications network and its sole revenue-generating segment, but also enhances its competitive advantage over rivals like Amazon Leo and established providers such as Viasat.

Starlink satellites, operating in low Earth orbit, provide broadband internet to both consumers and businesses, including American Airlines. The company has successfully secured contracts with various airlines and cruise lines. Esteemed carriers like United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa Group, British Airways, and Alaska Airlines (now merged with Hawaiian Airlines) have already upgraded certain aircraft with Starlink, as noted in SpaceX’s latest IPO registration filing.

American Airlines is now part of this group, although not all aircraft in its fleet will be upgraded to Starlink. The airline’s new Airbus A321XLR and A320neo models will come equipped with Starlink, while its Boeing jets will not be included in this initiative.

This progression further propels SpaceX as it approaches its highly anticipated IPO next month, which is expected to be the largest in history.
