Meta Launches Subscription Services for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, Teasing Upcoming AI Features
Meta is ramping up its commitment to subscription services. On Wednesday, the social media giant announced the global rollout of consumer subscription options for its flagship apps—Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp—while also initiating trials for new subscriptions targeting businesses, creators, and Meta AI users.
For a reasonable monthly charge, users can sign up for Instagram Plus ($3.99/mo), Facebook Plus ($3.99/mo), or WhatsApp Plus ($2.99/mo) to access premium features such as profile customization, super reactions, and analytics for stories, among other perks.
In her statement, Naomi Gleit, Meta’s product head, highlighted that “more exciting features” are anticipated in the future.
Additionally, Meta is set to initiate trials for more offerings, including professional plans designed for creators and businesses, as well as AI-focused plans for all users. These upcoming initiatives will be branded as “Meta One,” forming the cornerstone of the company’s future subscription services.

Earlier this year, Meta hinted at plans for a subscription model, launching initial tests in the spring. The consumer-focused offerings aim to provide enhanced features for avid users seeking more from their social media experience. This initiative also strives to create additional revenue streams beyond advertising, leveraging the potential of its existing user base, particularly as growth opportunities shrink in a crowded market.
The new “Plus” plans are customized for each app, with Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus targeting social expression, while WhatsApp Plus focuses on messaging and personalization.
Notably, Meta assures that these new plans do not replace its current offering, Meta Verified, which centers on user verification, impersonation protection, and additional support. (While this could change in the future, Meta is not yet planning to discontinue the previous services.)
For instance, the new Instagram Plus plan offers subscribers various enhancements, such as tracking total Story replays, creating unlimited audience lists beyond “Close Friends,” highlighting a Story weekly for increased visibility, extending Story visibility beyond 24 hours, previewing Stories without revealing viewer identities, searching the viewer list, and more. Users can also post directly to their profile and spotlight content without it appearing in their followers’ feeds.
Additional features include Super Heart animated reactions for Stories, custom app icons, personalized profile bios, and extra pins for profiles.
These enhancements are crafted to better support creators and individuals aiming to broaden their audience and engage more intensely with their followers, while appealing to regular users.
Facebook Plus offers a feature set similar to Instagram Plus. In contrast, WhatsApp Plus emphasizes distinct utilities, including app themes, custom ringtones, additional pinned chats, list customization, premium stickers, and more.

AI plans and additional offerings for creators and businesses
Alongside the launch, Meta indicates it will start testing further subscription plans, leading to some complexity in the offerings.
For Meta AI users, two plans will be tested: Meta One Plus ($7.99/mo) and Meta One Premium ($19.99/mo), both offering the same features but the Premium version allows access to higher-performance computation queries. This enhancement enables advanced reasoning for intricate tasks (i.e., a more pronounced “thinking mode” in the Meta AI app or on the web) and expands capabilities for video and image generation across Meta’s platforms.
Meta AI will remain complimentary for casual users; however, these plans adopt a pricing model akin to other AI service providers that charge for increased computing power and extensive usage. More features will be introduced in the coming weeks for those utilizing AI functionalities, according to Meta.
Testing for these AI plans is set to begin next month in Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia.
Additionally, two new plans for creators and businesses will commence testing later this week in regions such as Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Thailand, and Bangladesh.
The Meta One Essential plan ($14.99/mo) will include the Verified badge, impersonation protection, and a comprehensive linksheet allowing users to present their presence across social channels and the web, similar to Meta Verified.
Conversely, the more advanced Meta One Advanced plan ($49.99/mo) encompasses everything in the Essential plan, along with enhanced visibility in the Facebook feed, superior ranking in Facebook and Instagram searches, boosted promotions via a bold “Follow” button on Reels, and automated follow requests for users engaging with your content.
This plan can also aid in driving traffic to websites or online shops through links in Instagram posts, Reels, and enhanced Facebook and Instagram profiles featuring expanded linksheets. Naturally, these plans will offer advanced analytics, providing competitive insights on Instagram and custom audience metrics on Facebook.
Subscribers to the Advanced plan will also gain access to optimized scheduling tools, collaboration features for sharing access with account moderators (without sharing passwords), and notifications when others on Facebook or Instagram reuse your content, allowing for requests for credit for your original reels.
Gleit mentioned that Meta is currently piloting these AI and professional plans but intends to consolidate them under the Meta One umbrella in the future, with ongoing evolution and expansion planned.
