Universal Music Group and TikTok Renew Partnership to Tackle Unauthorized AI-Generated Music

Universal Music Group (UMG) and TikTok have recently renewed their licensing agreement, highlighting their shared commitment to eliminating unauthorized AI-generated music on the platform, thereby improving recognition for artists and songwriters.

In their joint announcement, UMG emphasized that this agreement “enhances TikTok and UMG’s innovative commitment to AI protections that support human creativity and ensure that financial rewards are properly allocated to artists and songwriters. Together, TikTok and UMG will strive to eliminate unauthorized AI-generated music from the platform while further refining attribution for artists and songwriters.”

This new agreement marks a significant development in the UMG-TikTok partnership.

For years, UMG has championed stricter content moderation policies across platforms, streaming services, and AI companies. Tensions heightened in 2024 when UMG accused TikTok of not adequately addressing problems related to AI-generated music and copyright. This public dispute resulted in UMG temporarily withdrawing its music catalog from TikTok, revealing the app’s growing reliance on licenses from major record labels, as popular tracks suddenly vanished from user videos.

The timing of TikTok’s commitment to addressing unauthorized or unlicensed music is particularly significant, especially as the music industry faces an influx of AI-generated content. Recently, concerns have risen regarding AI technologies that can mimic artists’ voices or create counterfeit songs that exploit streaming algorithms. Viral AI tracks impersonating well-known artists like Drake and The Weeknd raised concerns, particularly when some accumulated millions of streams before being taken down.

This agreement could also act as a blueprint for the larger tech industry as it navigates the intersections of AI, intellectual property, and platform accountability. With the EU ramping up its regulatory scrutiny on AI-generated content and various U.S. states following suit, pressure mounts on other platforms to establish similar governance structures.

TikTok is proactively working to demonstrate its value to the music industry by showcasing its capability to generate significant revenue for artists and rights holders. Last year, the platform introduced “TikTok for Artists,” an insights tool designed to assist artists in enhancing their marketing efforts while providing music labels access to crucial data.
