The Path of TikTok to Becoming a Super App
While TikTok is often labeled a social media giant, it has been progressively broadening its offerings. Over time, the app has rolled out features such as TikTok Shop, local discovery maps, improved search capabilities, gaming options, and more. Recently, it added hotel booking functionalities and is working towards obtaining a fintech license.
TikTok appears to be evolving into a “super app,” a platform where users can engage in a variety of activities beyond just watching and sharing videos, effectively meeting multiple needs in one place.
The concept of a super app is prominent in China, with WeChat serving as a prime example by merging features akin to Facebook, WhatsApp, Apple Pay, and an app store into one platform. Whether this model will proliferate outside China is up for debate, yet TikTok seems committed to exploring it.
Rather than relying on multiple apps, TikTok aspires to be the sole app users depend on for most of their digital activities. Following a significant leap with TikTok Shop, the company is applying a similar approach to its newly introduced features.
Hotel and Attraction Booking

Recently, TikTok launched TikTok GO, which allows users in the U.S. to discover and book hotels, attractions, and experiences directly through the app. TikTok GO offers an opportunity to browse lodging and activities via videos, searches, and location pages. Users can view details, verify availability, and complete bookings all in one platform.
Instead of directing users to external sites after showcasing a destination in a video, TikTok is positioning itself as an all-in-one platform where trending travel content can convert into bookings and income.
As users increasingly turn to TikTok as a search engine instead of Google, this new initiative puts TikTok in direct competition with Google’s primary services, such as Search and Google Maps, as it endeavors to become the go-to app for travel discovery and bookings.
Payments

A recent report from Reuters revealed that TikTok has sought approval from Brazil’s central bank to operate as a fintech company offering lending and payment services.
The company is pursuing two licenses: one for providing prepaid accounts, letting users store funds, receive money, and make payments, and another to serve as a direct credit provider, allowing it to lend capital or act as a connection platform between borrowers and lenders.
This development marks a significant extension for TikTok beyond its origins as a social media platform into an all-encompassing digital ecosystem. By integrating financial services into its app, TikTok aims to boost user engagement, create new revenue streams, and compete with fintech startups and e-commerce platforms.
TikTok Shop

One of TikTok’s most significant ventures outside of traditional social media was the launch of TikTok Shop. After testing the feature in 2021, it officially debuted in the U.S. in 2023, positioning the company to effectively rival Amazon, Shein, and other online retailers.
According to eMarketer, TikTok Shop’s U.S. sales soared by 407.0% in 2024 and an additional 108.0% in 2025, reaching $15.82 billion. Last year, TikTok captured an 18.2% share of the total social commerce market in the U.S., with expectations to rise to 24.1% by 2027.
Additionally, TikTok upped the ante against digital marketplaces with the recent introduction of TikTok Shop gift cards. The platform has also ventured into luxury retail, broadening its initial focus on more affordable merchandise.
Music

TikTok has had a profound influence on the music industry, shaping how users discover new tunes. In 2023, the company made an attempt to launch a streaming service called TikTok Music to compete with giants like Spotify and Apple Music, but it ultimately discontinued it a year later.
Instead, TikTok has chosen to enrich the music listening experience while collaborating with existing streaming services rather than competing directly. However, it still aims to fulfill music aspirations by introducing a feature that lets Apple Music subscribers play full tracks within the app after discovering them in their “For You” feed.
Search and Maps

TikTok has launched an extensive search feature that incorporates maps, local hashtags, and reviews, aiding users in discovering popular eateries, travel spots, shops, and local events. Additionally, it now provides more comprehensive information about locations and restaurants on dedicated pages, allowing users quick access to details including hours, ratings, pricing, and more.
At first, TikTok challenged Google’s Search by quickly displaying videos featuring comments on eateries and locations. However, users continued to turn to Google for accurate location details or reviews. Over recent years, TikTok has successfully minimized this reliance by embedding extensive place-related data directly within its app.
Microdramas

While TikTok is celebrated for user-generated entertainment, it has recently delved into microdramas by introducing a Minis section within the app and a standalone application dedicated to short TV shows structured into one-minute episodes. By exploring scripted content, TikTok aims to position itself as a formidable competitor to streaming giants like Netflix.
It’s crucial to acknowledge that TikTok initially expanded into entertainment with live streaming and longer video formats, indicating a notable shift from its original focus on 15-second clips.
Games

To encourage users to spend even more time on its platform, TikTok has introduced a variety of casual games within its app, fostering interaction among users through direct messaging. The addition of gaming indicates TikTok’s continuous evolution from a social media foundation to a fully-fledged entertainment platform where users can browse videos and challenge friends to simple games.
