Erin Brockovich Advocates for Transparency in Data Center Operations

Environmental activist Erin Brockovich has launched a new initiative aimed at improving transparency around the creation of data centers and their impact on nearby communities.

Brockovich, famously portrayed by Julia Roberts in the film about her legal struggles against Pacific Gas & Electric, has introduced a website that features a map of data centers throughout the United States.

The map is labeled as a “work in progress,” dependent on feedback from local residents regarding data centers. In a recent Substack update, Brockovich noted that following community input on data center issues in April, she received almost 4,000 responses in the first month alone.

“The main concern — overshadowing issues such as noise, water usage, and rising utility bills — can be summed up in one word that appeared often in the responses: transparency,” she stated.

Brockovich clarified that she is not issuing a “blanket statement against data centers” or AI, but is focused on “the trends identified in our map: projects being announced only after permits are granted, developers disregarding questions, and local officials signing NDAs before their communities are informed of proposed projects.”
