Erin Brockovich Advocates for Increased Transparency in Data Center Operations

Environmental activist Erin Brockovich has introduced a new initiative focused on improving transparency around the development of data centers and their impact on nearby communities.

Brockovich, famously portrayed by Julia Roberts in her legal fight against Pacific Gas & Electric, has launched a website that includes a comprehensive map showcasing data centers throughout the United States.

This map is considered a “work in progress” and will be frequently updated with input from the community concerning the data centers. In a recent Substack article, Brockovich noted that after local concerns were raised in April, she received almost 4,000 responses within the first month.

“The main concern—outweighing worries about noise, water consumption, and increasing utility costs—ultimately revolves around one commonly cited term in the feedback: transparency,” she stated.

Brockovich emphasized that she is not fundamentally opposed to data centers or artificial intelligence, but is concentrating on “the patterns evident on our map: project announcements made only after permits are granted, developers ignoring information requests, and local officials signing NDAs prior to informing communities about upcoming projects.”
